The Unheard Story of David and Goliath
Revisiting the stories you thought you knew
At this week's CHOW we will take a fresh look at one of the most familiar and retold stories in the whole of the biblical tradition: 1 Samuel 17 – Known to all as 'David and Goliath'
Arguably no other Bible story has so invaded the imagination of the world; the characters names are very frequently invoked in all facets of life to refer to the triumph of the underdog.
But is it all that clear cut? Who are these two characters really? Is David really portrayed as the virtuous and heroic figure we all assume him to be? Is Goliath really the kind of villain that we paint?
On Wednesday we will hear from 4 different interpreters of the narrative; Paul Milbank, Hamish Ramsay, Malcolm Gladwell (via TED) and you! As we look more closely at the biblical nuances referring to power, violence and intrigue and ask: Can we move beyond our Sunday school understanding of the famous stories of the Old Testament?
