A Head2Head debate on the question of Establishment

Head2Head is a series of debates at CHOW around disputed theological points. So far we have debated the role of women in the church, baptism - infant vs. believer's - and other hot Christian potatoes...

In this latest session we will be hosting a debate around the structure, funding model and relationship to the state of the Church of England in Jersey. Should the Churches be financially supported through the Parish rates system? Should there be a formal relationship between the Churches, the civil parishes the States of Jersey? What might be the economic and theological arguments for either arrangement and, more importantly, what would the impact be on the mission of the church in a changed arrangement?

Going head to head on these and other thorny questions are Simon Nash; Anabaptist, disestablishmentarian and - in a slightly bizarre twist - Anglican Church warden. And Brain Coutanche; former church warden - and for the purposes of this debate - antidisestablishmentarian (very satisfying to legitimately use that word in a sentence!). It's worth mentioning that these views do not necessarily represent the views of our speakers but that they are assuming these arguments for the purposes of the debate. In true CHOW fashion, each of our contestants in this Head2Head discussion have to buy each other a small gift to exchange at the end of the session; we have told them that they can't make an expenses claim through their church...
