Montfort Tadier has served as the Deputy for St Brelade for 7 years. During this time he has proved an unsettling and controversial presence within Jersey’s political scene. He has consistently pushed his colleagues and the wider island community to wrestle with deep and difficult questions about justice, poverty, ethics and Jersey’s wider role in the world and in so doing has made himself unpopular with those who would rather stick to business as usual.

More recently the church has been the focus of some of Montfort's public statements of criticism. The recent Medium Term Financial plan, approved by the States of Jersey in October, will affect the level of government support offered to unemployed, low income and disabled islanders. Montfort contests that in other places, the church is often leading the way fighting austerity and speaking out for the material interests of the poor and vulnerable. He asks the question why no such movement exists in Jersey.

In this CHOW session Montfort will asses the current political climate and talk us through some of the more significant budget decisions that have recently been made by the States and who they will most affect. He will also offer his vision for a different and more compassionate kind of politics and future for the island. He will then initiate discussion, asking whether Christian ‘Should care about the budget’ and therefore should we be more willing to get involved politically to ensure our views are represented. We have assembled panel of Christian leaders to offer thoughts and comments on these ideas and to help us all to engage with the questions and challenges that Montfort will present.

To what extent Christians should care about politics at all? Why it is that Christians sometimes seem to be selective about when and how they get involved in politics? What did Jesus mean when he said that his Kingdom is not of this world?

These are some of the question which Montfort calls us to examine and which we will wrestle with this week at CHOW.
