This week's CHOW is part two of our new series "The Future of the Church in Jersey".

Last week, Gavin Ashenden's talk included this statement:

"I think there are times when being offended is an extremely important thing to happen; we've outlawed it but it's wonderful because it means that someone's belief system has been challenged in a way that has aroused their emotions. Perhaps that's an opportunity to split through the emotions and look at the facts."

Gavin certainly provided the opportunity for this to happen in his controversial talk! Here is the link to the whole thing: http://businessconnect.je/chow/item/reuniting-the-great-traditions-and-regognising-the-great-threats.html

After Gavin's talk, I asked Tony Morling - this week's speaker who was present - what he would be talking about this week and he said:

"A lad came to see me this week, 24 years old – homeless. He failed to sign for one week of benefits and found himself homeless, lost his deposit, unable to claim benefits for the next 13 week and with no food... So while Gavin has painted with a wide pallet, I'll be starting within the human story of what I encounter around the Wesley centre and the call that is intrinsic within the Gospel story of striving for that complex yet essential word 'Justice'."

Tony's talk on the future of the church will also include reflections on the use of power and the dignity of difference.

I encourage you all to take the advice I gave at last week's well attended session: To do your best to attend all of these talks and not just the ones that you find inherently appealing – especially those from speakers who hold a different perspective to you. We really want this series to be a source of healthy dialogue and the exchange of ideas.
