What was the posture of the early Christian movement towards the political power space? How did the people who knew Jesus and who knew the people who knew Jesus think he affected their posture towards power? 

In this talk from Host 2015 Dr Stephen Backhouse asks us to consider the 'kenotic hymn' of Philippians 2, a key document of the early church positively vibrating with political and public associations which would have been forefront in the minds of the original audience but which tend to be missed by Christians today.

Lecturer in Social and Political Theology at St Mellitus College, London. Author of a number of books and articles on Christian thought, history and politics including The Compact Guide to Christian History (Lion: 2011), Kierkegaard’s Critique of Christian Nationalism (OUP: 2011) and the award-winning biography Kierkegaard: A Single Life (Zondervan: 2016). Working on ways to bring real theology to normal Christians. Originally from Canada, Stephen has also lived and studied in the UK and the USA.
